Manila: Riot police have clashed with squatters resisting demolition along a major road in the Philippine capital, killing at least one man and injuring dozens.
Hundreds of illegal settlers burned tires, hurled rocks, bottles and bags filled with fish innards at police, who responded with tear gas.
It was not clear what caused the death of a man, who appeared to be a protester.
A hospital worker said some of the injured Monday had gunshot wounds.
Paranaque City Mayor Florencio Bernabe Jr. says the settlers were resisting the demolition of a flea market despite his promises to relocate them in a housing project.
Demolition of squatter colonies often turns bloody in metropolitan Manila, where about a third of the 12 million residents live in slums.
